Dear Parent/Guardian,

Children need to wear appropriately laced-up athletic shoes for physical education class (no dressy shoes, boots, or loose skateboarding shoes). It is important for your child to wear proper footwear in order to participate safely and successfully in movement activities.
To help minimize the risk of injury, children must wear proper footwear for participation in P.E. Wearing sandals, flip-flops, Crocs, or soft pull-on shoes, or any other shoe considered unsafe for movement activities on our gym floor can often be dangerous for a child

In my years of teaching physical education, I have seen many a bump or bruise. The causes of injuries often results from clothing or shoes that fit incorrectly. Kids slip, trip, and fall when they wear shoes that are too big, or are tied loosely so that they slip off and on easily and come off when running.
Please have your child wear comfortable, easy-to-move-in clothes and tennis shoes on their scheduled P.E. days. These shoes do not need to be expensive. They should have a soft sole and lace-up securely. Most important is a good fit. Children like to know that they are prepared and following procedure, so appropriate shoes are important to them. Please check the schedule on the P.E. home page for your child's P.E. days.

If you aren’t sending your child to school wearing a pair of well fitting athletic shoes, they may be missing out on their biggest opportunity for physical exercise during the school week. Riverview offers three recess periods; morning recess, another before lunch, and one in the afternoon. There’s nothing like having kids play outside with their friends to really get them moving. Wearing a good pair of shoes can make the difference in your child’s ability to participate and compete with their peers. To ensure a safe environment, students need to wear clothing that allows them to move quickly and safely.

Your cooperation for your child's safety and active participation is very much appreciated.

Thank You!
