  • When you walk through the doors of Columbia Valley the first thing you will experience is the feeling of safety and belonging – that sense of “being home.”
  • You will know that the core business of our school is providing high-content and engaging work for our students by the quality and authenticity of their work proudly and prominently displayed throughout the building and classrooms.
  • You will hear the “Buzz” of engagement as teachers facilitate group discussions with students actively debating, discussing, sharing and challenging new learning as they make it their own.
  • You will hear a “common language” throughout our school, K through 5th grade. This helps in part to create a seamless education for our students in all the content areas.
  • Evidence of student engagement is easily determined through response journals kept by students in all of the content areas. Giving them a place to think and reflect on their new learning is key to applying these new concepts into other academic areas as well as outside of the school’s walls.
  • Having access to these journals as well as other formative and summative assessments, teachers can assess the needs of each individual student and plan for “next steps” in moving them forward on their educational journey.
  • You will see and hear teachers working together in collaborative teams as instructional leaders designing work for students that is engaging within the content and will develop critical intellectual habits and skills.
  • You will find the principal out and about the building: having lively debate/conversations with teachers, observing an engaging lesson in a classroom, reading a story to a class, talking and having lunch in the cafeteria with students, out on the playground checking in with our playground assistants just to name a few.
  • Parents and our community are valued and invited to come in to visit and/or volunteer through our Parent/Teacher Organization or the I-CARE Program in whatever capacity they are willing to contribute their talents. We understand that parents are the “First Teachers” of our children and want to build on that foundation, collaborating with all our stakeholders.
  • The key to success is the fundamental belief held by all staff members that all Columbia Valley students are OUR kids. Not yours. Not Mine. OURS.
